Term vs. Whole Life

A straightforward comparison of two common approaches to life insurance.

Most life insurance conversations eventually come down to a single question: temporary coverage or permanent coverage. Term and whole life are the two most common answers, and they are built around genuinely different assumptions.

Term life covers a fixed period. It has no cash value, premiums are typically lower for the same benefit amount, and the policy ends when the term does. Whole life is designed to last for life, generally costs more, and accumulates cash value over time that can often be borrowed against.

The tradeoff is cost versus duration. For the same monthly amount, term will usually buy a substantially larger benefit; whole life buys a smaller benefit that does not expire and carries a savings component. Neither is inherently better — they solve different problems.

Term tends to fit when the need has an end date: a mortgage that will be paid off, children who will become financially independent, a working career that will eventually stop generating income. Whole life is more often considered when the need is genuinely permanent, or when the cash value feature serves a specific planning purpose.

A few practical questions usually clarify the choice faster than comparing product features: How long would someone actually depend on this money? What monthly premium is realistically sustainable for that whole period? And what other savings or benefits already exist?

Product structures, costs, and features vary meaningfully between carriers. Use this as a framework for the comparison rather than a substitute for reviewing specific options.
