When should you consider life insurance?
The life events that typically prompt people to look at coverage for the first time.

Life insurance rarely becomes relevant because of an age. It becomes relevant when someone else starts depending on your income, or when you take on an obligation that would outlive you.
The most common prompts are predictable: getting married or combining finances, buying a home and taking on a mortgage, having a child, becoming responsible for an aging parent, or starting a business that carries debt.
Timing matters for a practical reason. Premiums are generally based on age and health at the time a policy is issued, so coverage secured earlier tends to cost less than the same coverage secured later — and health changes can affect eligibility.
Employer coverage is worth a careful look rather than an assumption. It is often a modest multiple of salary, and it typically ends when employment does, which makes it a supplement rather than a complete answer for most households.
It is also worth revisiting coverage after major changes rather than treating it as a one-time decision. Needs generally rise with new obligations and fall as debts are paid down and savings accumulate.
