How much life insurance might you need?

Common ways people size a benefit amount — and the questions behind each one.

There is no universal right answer to how much life insurance someone needs, but there are a few well-worn methods for arriving at a number that is at least defensible.

The simplest is an income multiple: some multiple of annual income, often somewhere between five and ten times. It is quick and easy to reason about, but it ignores what your household actually owes and what it already has saved.

A more specific approach adds up obligations directly — remaining mortgage balance, other debt, expected education costs, and several years of living expenses — then subtracts existing savings and any coverage already provided through work. What remains is the gap.

A third lens is time-based: how many years would your household need support, and what would it cost to replace your contribution over those years? This one is particularly useful for households where one person handles caregiving rather than earning, since that contribution has real replacement cost.

Whichever method you use, a few things are easy to overlook: coverage through an employer usually ends when the job does, benefit needs shrink as debts get paid down, and both partners in a two-income household typically have a gap worth considering.

Any figure you calculate is a starting point for a conversation, not a quote. Actual eligibility and pricing depend on the carrier and your individual circumstances.
